FAQ About Benifuki Green Tea Bags

What is Benifuuki?

Watch as Kei explains to ChaCha about Benifuuki.

What is the teabag made of?

The pyramid tea sachet bag is made of premium quality nonwoven fabric (non-plastic) called Soilon ソイロン, which is Japanese biodegradable material made from plant-based resources, corn starch and sugarcane.

It is used primarily as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, especially in products like tea bags, food packaging, and other single-use items.

The tea bag is pyramid-shaped, allowing the tea to open up fully for the best aroma and taste.

Read more about the soilon nonwoven fabric we use for our tea bag here.

How many times can I reuse the tea bags?

You can steep the 8 oz (235 ml) size 2-3 times with hot water.  Of course, the third steeping will not be as strong as the first. The second or third steeping tastes sweeter and milder than the first; some people like the taste of the second steeping better.

For optimal flavor, steep 1 teabag in 8 oz (230 ml) of water at approximately 175°F-185°F (80-85°C) for 60 to 120 seconds. Adjusting the steeping time and temperature can help you achieve your preferred taste.

Teabags are also ideal for cold brewing. Add 2-3 tea bags to 30 oz (900ml) of cold water and refrigerate overnight (at least 3 hours).

Remember to take out the teabag overnight; keeping the teabag too long will result in bitter-tasting tea.

What is Methylated Catechins?

Methylated catechins are a unique type of antioxidant found predominantly in Benifuki green tea, a special Japanese tea variety. These catechins, such as epigallocatechin-3-O-methyl gallate (EGCG3Me), are naturally modified with a methyl group, enhancing their stability and effectiveness. Unlike regular catechins, which are common in most green teas, methylated catechins have been scientifically recognized for their exceptional ability to help reduce allergic reactions, such as hay fever, sneezing, and runny nose.

What makes methylated catechins particularly remarkable is their dual action. In addition to their anti-allergic properties, they also have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, helping to suppress inflammatory responses in the body. These compounds also act as potent antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and promoting overall health. Found almost exclusively in Benifuki tea, methylated catechins set this tea apart from others, making products like Benifuki Candy not only a delicious treat but also a natural remedy for allergies and inflammation.

How can Methylated Catechins fight allergies?

Methylated catechins blocks the immunoglobulin then, the histamines. These 2 compounds trigger and sustain the allergic reaction. Immunoglobulin, a.k.a the IgE, are attached to the mast cells and when it detects the incoming allergen, the IgE makes the mast cells release chemicals mediators including histamines.

What are the benefits of the Methylated Catechins?

It prevents allergies and it makes you feel better when sick. It also helps to lower cholesterol levels according to an experiment done in Japan.

Methylated Catechins are chemical elements that inhabit the mast cell response. Because of it, the green tea can prevent allergies, hay fever and MCAD.

MCAD means Mast Cell Activation Disorder - a condition in which mast cells inappropriately and excessively release chemical mediators.

The Methylated catechins fights the allergies better than the normal EGCG meaning you will get a relief from runny nose, sore throat and other forms of allergies.

Why is the package pink/red when it is green tea?

Benifūki (紅風貴) is a unique Japanese tea cultivar known for its rich flavor and functional benefits. Its name reflects its origins and characteristics:

  • "Beni" (紅) means "red" in Japanese and is commonly used in the names of tea cultivars with Assam or hybrid black tea lineage. Benifūki was developed from a cross between Benihomare (べにほまれ)—a black tea cultivar—and Makura Cd86, a descendant of Darjeeling.
  • "Fūki" (風) translates to "wealth and nobility," reflecting the cultivar’s esteemed quality and refined character.

Inspired by the meaning behind its name, we incorporated the essence of "red" (紅) into our package design, creating a visual identity that reflects the cultivar’s heritage and character.

Does this tea contain caffeine?

Yes, this tea contains caffeine, but the amount is lower than that of coffee. A typical cup of this tea has approximately 34 mg of caffeine, about one-third the amount found in a cup of coffee.

What are forms of benifuki tea do you carry?

Our benifuki teas are available in powder, teabag and candy form. All are the same tea and good for allergy.

What is so special about your green tea?

Our green tea is the best-selling Japanese green tea in Japan online. The reason is simple: it tastes good, and most of our customers are repeat customers who come back for more.

Our tea is grown using the Chagusaba method. The Chagusaba Method is a traditional green tea farming method used for centuries in areas where plants such as the Japanese silver grass are cut and used as organic fertilizer between autumn and winter.Plants are cut into small pieces and are carefully placed on the ground of the farmland. This increases the ground temperature and moisture in the dirt, which fertilizes the soil better. Japanese silver grass also contains many silicic acids, which are excellent for making the dirt richer. This process is highly labor-intensive, but the tradition has been followed for centuries in the area to create the best green tea.

Are your products vegan?

Yes. All our products are 100% Vegan and 100% natural. No artificial flavors are added.

Is your tea made in Japan?

Yes. All our products are 100% made in Japan. Within Japan, our tea farms are located in the area that is known for the best green tea production in Japan, Shizuoka by Mt. Fuji.

Please see About Us Page for more information.

Yes. All our products are Gluten free.

Is it GMO-Free?

Yes. All our products are GMO free and cruelty-free.

What is the cultivar of your tea?

Is there nutritional information regarding tea?

When you go to the specific product you are interested in, scroll down and you will see the “Nutrition Facts” tab, and there you can see all the nutritional information.

Are your tea blended, meaning blended with tea leaves from different plantations/cultivars, or do most come from a single plantation?

None of our Japanese green tea is blended. They all come from our farm in Shizuoka and single cultivar (Yabukita orBenifuuki forBenifuuki products).

Does your matcha have any filler?

Absolutely not. Our matcha is 100% pure matcha and no filler is used.

I don’t know which tea to try first. Which tea do you recommend?

We have created a video and blog post about this. Please click here or the image below.

9 Most Popular Japanese Tea Types

The world of Japanese green tea is vast and wonderful, but it is sometimes confusing with all the terms used. For this reason, we have created a Glossary of Japanese Green Tea with a chart so that you can decide which one would be best for you. Please refer to the Glossary of Japanese Green Tea for more information.

If you are new to green tea, we usually recommend Nozomi, which is very popular as it tastes similar to widely known Gyokuro Tea but without a high price tag.

If you want to use it for baking and cooking, powdered form matcha is excellent. You can make lattes, smoothies or simply add it to ice cream!

If you are looking for diet tea, consider our award-winning diet Pu-erh Tea. This has natural dieting elements that are much higher than other types of tea.

If you have hay fever or allergies, Benifuuki Green Tea has natural elements which block histamines and alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of seasonal allergies, hives, and eczema.

If you want cold green tea, try our Gokuzyo Aracha Teabag. And here is an article about how you can cold brew Japanese green tea.

If you like the aroma of green tea, you would love our Aracha (Crude Tea), which has the wild aroma of green tea which tea farmers have consumed for centuries.

If you want low caffeine tea or if you want to drink tea at night, you will want to try our low caffeine Hojicha.

If you want the best of the best, no other tea can beat Issaku Premium.  (limited quantity available).

We have created a whole article about how to select Japanese green tea. Please click here or click on the image below to read more about this.

What tea is the best to lose weight/mix in with smoothies? I saw you have a specific tea for weight loss, but it is tea leaves, and in bags, so I did not think that would work. Do you have any recommendations?

For losing weight with a smoothie, we still suggest using Diet Puerh Tea.

Since this is not in powdered form, you must steep them first and then mix them into a smoothie.Since this is not in a powdered form, you should steep them first and then mix them into a smoothie. You can follow the instructions under the “loose leaf tea” section of our article How to Make Green Tea Smoothies.

The other option is our matcha. Although not as much as the diet tea above, matcha does have chemical properties for losing weight. You can find it here: Premium Matcha

What about the Expiration Date?

We get all our freshly picked green tea from Japan every week. Most of our products have an expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing, so you will have enough time to enjoy your green tea! The date of Manufacturing and expiration are printed on each package.

How long is the tea good after opening?

The tea is good for one year from manufacturing, even after you open the package.

However, we strongly encourage you to seal the tea in an airtight container, such as multiple zip lock bags and store it in a dark, cool place or refrigerator for retaining good taste.

Tea absorbs other odors quickly; therefore, please ensure your package is air-tight.  We also recommend Airscape, which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with tea as well. Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.

I've heard that Matcha can be consumed even years after production.

We do not offer aged matcha.

All our matcha products are freshly cropped and packaged with an expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing.

Some companies indeed offer aged matcha; however, the environment to age tea has to be controlled and maintained carefully to retain the quality without the spread of bacteria for safely facilitating the aging of matcha; we do not sell this kind of matcha, and we do not recommend eating old matcha which is has not been aged safely.

What is the best water to use for Green Tea?

Green tea is best prepared with soft water with fewer minerals. If you have a water softener filter system, use the water filtered by the softener. If you use bottled water, try avoiding ones with "Added Minerals," as they tend to distort the tea flavor.

If you have access to Evian, it will taste better as Evian is known for soft water

Benifuuki is naturally higher in catechins than most green teas, which can make it taste strong, so we steam ours to keep the cup smooth rather than sharp. Drink it hot, or leave a bag in cold water in the fridge for 4–6 hours for a clean, refreshing iced version. Mild enough for every day.

WHAT IS BENIFUKI?

Benifuki (べにふうき) is a relatively new type of Japanese green tea. It was first created in 1965 when the tea cultivars Assamica and Sinensis were cross-bred in Japan. Before long, it was categorized as one of the most effective green teas for fighting allergens. It contains high levels of methylated catechins, one of the highest EGCG among tea.

HEALTH BENEFITS

• Prevents allergies:
Methylated Catechins inhibit mast cell responses, reducing hay fever and allergies. The effects are beneficial to those suffering from MCAD.

• Boosts detox:
Enhances liver fat breakdown, aiding metabolism and obesity prevention.

• Lowers blood pressure:
Clinical trials show Benifuki tea outperforms others in reducing hypertension.

• Improves skin:
Reduces histamines causing irritations like eczema and hives.

GROWN IN SUGARCANE SOIL

Like a fine wine, high-quality tea depends on more than pretty packaging. The age of the leaves, their growing conditions, and even soil fertility all impact the final flavor. The secret to crafting a sweet, nutritious tea like no other is how tea is grown in sugarcane soil and processed.

Appetizing green tea

The Benifuuki Japanese Green Tea is a mildly flavored green tea with sweet, grassy notes, with minimal to no bitter notes as long as you don't brew with boiling hot water and/or too long. I like pairing this with sweet desserts, sushi, or just as. You can also cold brew the teabag overnight for a cooling and thirst-quenching healthy drink.

Mild, slightly sweet tasting Benifuuki - "Allergy relief tea"

Benifuuki tea is mainly consumed to help treat allergies. Benifuuki is actually a black tea varietal that is processed like a green tea - and as a result it ends up containing methylated catechins which have shown numerous health benefits, particularly for allergies. These special methylated catechins are not present at all in other green teas - normal sencha has plenty of EGCG, but no methylated catechins. So while Benifuuki doesn't taste as good as a high quality sencha, it is very healthy, high in methylated catechins, and has been studied in multiple clinical trials to reduce allergy symptoms. For the pleasant taste, unique presence of methylated catechins, and just unique tea experience of trying Benifuuki I can recommend this product. The taste is much better than powdered benifuuki and the product seems higher quality - but steeped tea is possibly less effective than the powder. All that being said - while I still recommend this as a tea, I can't really recommend this Benifuuki as an allergy relief product, and here is why:First, Benifuuki tea must be consumed for weeks to months to work for allergies. It's not an instant treatment, and you have to be dedicated if you really want to benefit from it. Most of the studies involve consuming 1.5+ grams benifuuki twice per day. So ideally for this to work for allergies, you need to drink 2+ teabags a day, every day. That's a big commitment, and certainly not a cheap one. If this product was 100 teabags vs 30 it would be much more suitable for allergy relief. It's possible you will get allergy relief from drinking just 1 tea bag per day, but at least all of the studies I have seen used 3+ grams minimum per day.Another small issue with this product is the teabags. I'm not sure if they nylon or biodegradable fiber, but if they are silken/nylon then microplastics can be an issue. I prefer to always use biodegradable so I wish the description or packaging specified. I also noticed a bit of stem in the bags. Not really a big deal, but high quality tea typically won't have any stem.My Steep instructions, using ~270ml water:165F for 2 minutes.175F for 3 minutes212 for 10 minutesI am able to get 3 steeps out of this teabag and avoid any of them being very bitter. It is important to steep with high heat for a long time for your final cup to maximize the methylated catechin extraction.Flavor notes:Slightly sweet, grassy, not bitter when steeped appropriately. Tastes sort of like bancha or aracha to me.Thoughts:I recommend this product to anyone that wants to try true Benifuuki tea. It is a fairly high quality, pleasant tasting tea, and I think is a good example of what Benifuuki should taste like. Don't expect it to taste like good sencha, but rather treat it as a medicinal product. If you do want to use Benifuuki specifically for allergies, you should ideally be drinking 2 or more teabags per day, and for that reason I recommend looking for a larger 100-count teabag package or a bulk bag of Benifuuki powder.

Allergy remedy - but not enough servings to be useful.

Benifuuki tea is very interesting, and as a lifelong sufferer from allergies, I have been wanting to try it out for a while. It is a black tea cultivar, processed as a green tea - and that gives a very high percentage of methylated catechins. Benifuuki tea and the methylated catechins have shown a lot of unique biological activity including: anti-allergic effects, anti-hypertensive, cholesterol lowering. The dosage:Most studies I've seen online use 2 to 3 grams of Benifuuki powder per day. Each benifuuki stick contains 0.6 grams, which explains why the directions say "suggested to take 4 times a day". There are 14 sticks per container, so if you follow the packaging directions, this would only last you 3 days...Benifuuki takes weeks to work - it isn't an instant allergy treatment. You really need a large 100 stick package, or just a bigger 80 or 100g bag of benifuuki powder to properly use it for allergies.Taste:Tastes like standard powdered green tea. Not bitter, a hint of catechin taste that reminds me of bancha. Overall - very drinkable - but certainly not as tasty as good powdered sencha or matcha.Thoughts:This product isn't very reasonable at just 14 sticks and recommending 4 sticks per day. I recommend finding a much larger package of benifuuki powder if you are really trying to use it to treat allergies. For example, a 100g bag would last you 30 days at a high 3g/day dose, that is much more reasonable than the 3 days this pack lasts.

Yum!

I love how convenient these tea bag sachets are. These sachets come inside of a resealable bag! Fresh smelling before inserting the tea bag inside of a hot mug. The flavor is tasty, more bold at the end. I do feel more energized after drinking a serving of this product.

Pyramid Teabags Coated With Matcha Powder

Very enjoyable matcha coated green tea from Japan conveniently packaged in pyramid tea bags for a quick treat. The 30 teabags are shipped in a heavy plastic bag with a zip closure. The instructions on the back say to use 8 ounces of 175 degree water and let the tea steep for 1 to 2 minutes.I prewarmed my teapot while I heated the rest of the water in my kettle to 180 degrees. When the water reached the proper temperature I got rid of the water that was preheating my teapot and put the 180 degree water in along with one teabag. Covered with a tea cozy (to keep the tea at the proper temperature while steeping) and waited two minutes. The tea is a beautiful green with typical Matcha cloudiness. It was sweet and mildly vegetal tasting with no bitterness. The cup had a bit of Matcha powder sediment when I finished the tea.I have included a picture of the dry teabag before steeping and another of the tea leaves I removed from the bag after steeping. The description says it is good for allergy relief but I don't know anything about that claim. I just know it is a tasty, slightly sweet green tea that is very easy to prepare.

TASTES LIKE MATCHA

I feel a little safer when I consume foods or beverages that are UFDA regulated but this tea looked very promising. I looked up the company, and it seemed pretty legit. I ususally opt for USDA organic/non GMO but I do love green tea and have recently taken an interest in matcha. That said, this tea arrives in a vaccum sealed pouch containing the tea bags. It is written in Chinese, so reference the website for specific info. The smell is fresh and meadow like. The taste too, is earthy and meadow like. The longer you steep, the deeper the flavor. I like a deeper flavor and this imparts a very subtle bitter note. The color is a beautiful green and the flavor matches this. I would compare this to matcha in flavor, aroma, and color. I am pleased with this tea and will continue to drink and enjoy the benefits from drinking it.

Great Tea

Very pleased with the Packaging. You get 30 tea bags per package. The tea has a pleasant taste to it. Smooth going down. Not to strong or to bitter. The color is dark and rich with a greenish tint. I can’t comment on if it helps with my allergies because this is my first cup. Update review a little later.

Tastes like an ordinary green tea; brew is muddy fluorescent yellow

I never heard of Benifuuki Japanese Green Tea but I drink green tea all the time. I also never heard of a tea that is supposed to help allergies. I personally do not have allergies to pollen or the outdoors but I love green tea.Except for a sticker on the back, the package is in Japanese. There are 30 tea bags in this package. I brewed this with 8 ounces of 175F degree water for 2 minutes (package says 60 to 120 seconds). The tea has a very faint vegetal flavor but otherwise it is tasteless. It brews to a muddy fluorescent yellow. There is nothing about this tea that would have me coming back for more. The current price of $30 is pricey for this but probably the going rate for this type.

Smooth and relaxing green tea

I found this to be a very smooth and enjoyable green tea at 3-4 minutes of steeping. The flavor is strong but not overwhelming and I can enjoy this tea without adding anything to it.

Tastes delicious with no bitterness - There is some science behind the product concept

GREAT TASTELet me begin by saying that this tea is delicious. I did not find it to be bitter at all. Benifuuki tea, while it has some of the highest of amounts of green tea catechins, it also tends to be bitter. The manufacturer indicates that the reason why this product is not bitter is because their tea is grown in soil that previously had sugarcane growing in it.DOUBLE BLIND RESEARCH STUDYI did a little research on methylated catechins, and I found an article about the subject in Allergology International, volume 63, Issue 2, 2014 pages 211-217. A double-blind study was done with 51 adults who suffered from “Japanese cedar pollinosis” (JCP).So, bear with me as I get all science geek… Here is a direct quote from the the study: “Fifty-one adults with JCP participated in the study. Twenty-six subjects were assigned to 'Benifuuki' and 25 to 'Yabukita'. The AUC of symptom score during the peak pollen season in the 'Benifuuki' group was significantly smaller than in the 'Yabukita' group for each of runny nose, itchy eyes, tearing, total nasal symptom score, total ocular symptom score, nasal symptom-medication score and ocular symptom-medication score. The total QOL-related questionnaire score for one week in the peak pollen season was significantly better in the 'Benifuuki' group. Increase in the peripheral eosinophil count in response to pollen exposure was suppressed in the 'Benifuuki' group. No adverse events were reported in either group.”Incidentally, Yabukita tea does NOT contain methylated catechins (per a “Scientific Reports” article), so it makes sense that this tea went up against the Benifuuki tea in the preceding study.SERVING SUGGESTION - I NOTICED A LABELING ERRORSo, there is some real science behind the concept. I have allergies pretty bad, so I’d be interested to see if this product makes a difference. This product is to be served using 3.5 ounces of hot/cold water or milk. There are 14 servings per package. (While the Amazon description page and the Nutrition Facts do say “14” servings, I noticed some labeling that says “30” servings (see photo). That is an error). I guess, to an American, 3.5 ounces is more like an “espresso shot.”MY RATING CRITERIABased on the flavor and the supporting science, I can say this tea has the makings of an excellent product. I really struggled on deciding whether to give this product 4 stars or 5 stars. I’m not sure how it’s going to work for me personally and I can’t say I’ve noticed any immediate effects. Based on that, I decided to give 4 stars (especially since there are no indications on the packaging on how soon one might expect results). I recommend doing some of your own research to determine if this tea is a good option for you. I will update this review if I notice any changes.

MCAS magic

I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and have tried every medication, diet and lifestyle adjustment my specialist doctor and care team have thought of. I heard about Benifuuki on a podcast, and I thought it would not hurt for me to try. It has changed my life. I cannot guarantee it will work for you, but I strongly encourage that you try it if you suffer from allergies and MCAS. Also! I recently had issues ordering from Amazon (not direct from the company). This left me with days without the tea and it was affirmed how a daily cup makes such a difference for me! Because my order was so delayed reached out directly to the company's customer service. They replied right away expedited my shipment for me!!! I cannot praise this company more highly!

Hollis-san, thank you for writing this. That is a lot to share publicly, and we don't take it lightly.

Everyone is different, so we would never promise anyone else the same experience — but knowing your daily cup has come to matter that much to you means a great deal to us.

Sorry about the wait on the Amazon order. Once it goes through that channel it is out of our hands, so we are glad you wrote to us directly and we could get it moving. If it ever happens again, ordering from our own site is usually the quicker route, and our inbox is always open to you.

Thank you very much!

Excellent customer service, great products

Very happy to find a company who has this tea state-side, especially with all the uncertainty around imports these days. Been taking Benifuki green tea once a day since March 2022 and (along with my allergy medications) it helps me live a more normal life with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome! Very grateful I found this tea and can support a small business while taking it! ✨🙇

Thank you so much for sharing this. We’re truly grateful you found us and that we’re able to reliably provide this tea when it matters to you. Knowing it has become part of your daily routine and supports you in living more comfortably means a great deal to us. We also really appreciate your support of our small business — thank you for trusting us and for being with us.

Would Buy Again

Reasonably priced.I'm new to matcha so take my review with a grain of salt (or matcha). I've been mixing matcha with my lemonade all summer for a unique Arnold Palmer, hoping to draw on green tea's unique health benefits. Every version of matcha I've bought has tasted the same to me. So I look at price. This tastes fine and is half the price of some other brands on the market. Choose wisely!
