                        About Green Tea

                        • What is so special about your green tea?
Our green tea is the best-selling Japanese green tea in Japan online. The reason is simple: it tastes good, and most of our customers are repeat customers who come back for more.

Our tea is grown using the Chagusaba method. The Chagusaba Method is a traditional green tea farming method used for centuries in areas where plants such as the Japanese silver grass are cut and used as organic fertilizer once a year between autumn and winter. Plants are cut into small pieces and being carefully placed on the ground of the farm land. This increases the temperature and moisture of dirt which fertilize the dirt better. Japanese silver grass also contains a lot of silicic acid, which is great for making the dirt richer. This process is extremely labor intensive, but the tradition has been followed for centuries in the area to create the best green tea. Read more about Chagusaba Method on our blog.

                            • I would like to try green tea. Which tea do you recommend?
The world of Japanese green tea is very wide and wonderful, but it is sometimes confusing with all the terms used. For this reason, we have created a Glossary of Japanese Green Tea with a chart so that you can decide which one would be best for you. Please refer to Glossary of Japanese Green Tea for more information.

If you are new to green tea, we usually recommend Nozomi which is very popular as it tastes similar to widely known guyokuo tea but without the high price tag.

If you want to use it for baking and cooking, powdered form matcha is excellent. You can make latte, smoothie or simply add to ice cream!

If you are looking for diet tea, consider our award winning diet pu-erh tea.  This has natural diet elements that are much higher than other type of tea.

If you have hay fever or allergies, benifuuki green tea has natural elements which blocks histamines and alleviates the uncomfortable symptoms of seasonal allergies, hives, and eczema.

If you want cold green tea, try our Nozomi tea bag specifically made for cold brewing.

If you like the aroma of green tea, you would love our Aracha (Crude Tea) which has wild aroma of green tea which have been consumed by tea farmers for centuries.

If you want the best of the best, no other tea can beat Issaku Premium.  (limited quantity available).

                              • Does your green tea have tulsi in it?
No, but you are welcome to add tulsi in our high quality green tea. We understand that in India people put tulsi in green tea, but we wish to deliver the highest quality of Japanese Green Tea in the purest form possible. In Japan, tulsi is not put in green tea, and Japan does not harvest tulsi in general; therefore, we do not put tulsi. However, please add tulsi yourself if you like. In fact, we know that our fresh and high quality green tea does go well with aroma and flavor of tulsi!

                                  • I've heard that Matcha can be eaten after years of production.
We do not offer aged matcha.

All our matcha products are freshly cropped and packaged with expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing.

It is true that some company offer aged matcha; however, the environment to age tea has to be controlled and maintained carefully to retain the quality without spread of bacteria for the facility aging matcha; we do not sell such kind of matcha, and we do not recommend eating old matcha which is not controlled properly.

                                  • What is the best water to use for Green Tea?
Green tea is best prepared with soft water with less minerals. If you have water softener filter system, use the water filtered by softener. If you use bottled water, try avoiding ones with "Added Minerals" as they tend to break the tea flavor. If you have access to Evian, it would give better taste as Evian is known for soft water.

                                    • I am worried about radioactive materials in products made in Japan.
Our tea is 100% safe from radioactive materials. Here is a link to an official test result of radioactive material and it indicates that there are no radioactive elements found in our tea. (This is a link to brief English Translation of the Report.)  Please note that this test was conducted in 2012 which is one year after Fukushima accident in March of 2011. Even after 6 years from incident, we keep testing and ensuring that no harmful materials are in our tea.

                                      • I'd like to know the different ways in which I can take green tea...is it good with honey, or should I just drink it plain...
In Japan, people usually consume green tea plain without adding sugar or honey.  However, in other countries such as in US and India, it is common to drink with honey which does go very well. We have compiled some green tea recipe such as Sparkling Tea with lemon and fruit tea.  Sign up to our newsletter to get the recipe for free. We also have an extensive article of how to make Japanese Green Tea Smoothie which might be of interest to you.
