Sakura Virtual Tour

On April 6th, 2024, Lauren-san from Arigato Travel, hosted a Virtual Hanami Viewing from Tokyo Yanaka. (Click here to download Arigato Travel's current green tea related experiences)

  • What is Hanami?
Hanami (花見) is a traditional Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of cherry blossoms, known as sakura. During spring, people gather under blooming cherry trees to enjoy picnics, socialize, and appreciate the blossoms, symbolizing the beauty and fleeting nature of life. This practice is celebrated across Japan and is a significant cultural event each year.

FAQs about Virtual Sakura Cherry Blossom Viewing

What is hanami (花見) — and why is it such a big deal in Japan?

Hanami (花見) literally means 'flower viewing,' but in Japan it almost always specifically refers to viewing cherry blossoms (sakura 桜). It's been a cultural practice for over 1,200 years, originally an aristocratic pastime that became a nationwide spring ritual. People gather in parks under blooming sakura trees, eat picnic-style meals, and contemplate the beauty of the flowers.

The cultural weight comes from the brevity of the bloom — sakura flowers fully open for only 1-2 weeks before falling. The transience is the point. It's a structured moment of mono no aware (物の哀れ) — a gentle awareness of impermanence, beauty, and the present moment. Even casual hanami picnics carry that quiet undertone.

When is cherry blossom season in Japan?

Late March through mid-April for most of mainland Japan. The bloom moves north — Okinawa starts in February, Tokyo and Kyoto peak around late March-early April, Hokkaido peaks in late April or early May. Each year's precise timing depends on winter and early-spring weather; the Japan Meteorological Corporation publishes annual sakura forecasts that get heavy news coverage.

If you're planning a trip specifically for hanami, target the first week of April for Tokyo/Kyoto and watch the forecasts in mid-March to fine-tune. Sakura season is the most-popular tourism window in Japan, so book accommodations 4-6 months ahead.

Why drink green tea during cherry blossom viewing?

Tradition and pragmatism. Traditionally, Japanese tea has accompanied cherry blossom picnics for centuries — the gentle bitterness of sencha or the sweetness of matcha balances the rich foods often eaten at hanami (sakura-mochi 桜餅, dango 団子, bento 弁当). Pragmatically, hot tea in a thermos keeps you warm during the still-cool spring weather and pairs beautifully with the slow, contemplative pace of viewing flowers for an afternoon.

There's also a deeper aesthetic resonance. The pink-white delicacy of sakura blossoms and the muted greens, ambers, and earthy tones of Japanese tea share a similar visual sensibility — both are considered foundational to wabi-sabi (侘寂) aesthetics. Tea makes hanami more thoroughly a hanami experience.

Can I host a 'virtual' hanami at home if I can't get to Japan?

Absolutely. Set up a small viewing arrangement: a vase with sakura branches (you can find them at Japanese florists in March-April, or use silk versions year-round), a low table or floor cushions, traditional sweets (sakura-mochi or wagashi 和菓子 from a Japanese bakery), and a pot of green tea. Our Issaku Reserve sencha or Limited Reserve Premium Matcha both have the right springtime brightness for the occasion.

The mood matters more than the props. Pick a slow afternoon, put away your phone, and actually sit with the moment. If you have access to any blooming flowers (cherry, plum, magnolia — they all work), use them. The Japanese take on hanami is less about the specific tree and more about the ritual of stopping to notice spring.

What teas pair best with sakura viewing?

Three good options. First, ceremonial-grade matcha — particularly suited to the contemplative mood. Whisk a bowl of usucha (薄茶) and sip slowly while looking at the flowers. Second, premium sencha — bright, vegetal, springtime-feeling. Third, sakura tea itself (cherry-blossom-flavored sencha or genmaicha) — a more direct seasonal pairing.

Avoid hojicha (ほうじ茶) for traditional hanami — its toasty, autumnal character clashes with sakura's springtime delicacy. Save hojicha for autumn moon-viewing (tsukimi 月見) instead. Pairing tea to season is a small detail, but it's the kind of detail that makes a Japanese cultural moment feel right rather than performative.
